Since publishing these pictures further information has been received about the Battle Carol Singers group, (on the left below) from

Audrey McAllan (nee Foot) who many of you will remember from the Battle Bookshop.

The singers were members of The Fellowship of St George - and Audrey lists them from left to right:

In the front row:  Archie Wiggins (in beret), Rev Francis Vere-Hodge Curate  (in cap), next two not known, then Virginia Knight and Daphne Martin, Lantern bearer not known, then another not known, followed by Eileen Foot and Betty Oliver and still in the front row another unknown on the right.

In the back row: Ivor Holland, Chris Poole, myself-Audrey Foot, Ann Groome, Gordon Thompsett, Maurice Thompsett and Gwyneth Russell (behind Betty Oliver)

Thankyou Audrey for your very useful contribution to this page.

Hop-picking starts on Friday and pickers are arriving at Guinness fields in Bodium. Some of them will live in special hutted-camps during during thr picking season, others living nearer the fields will travel to and frfo daily.
The young lady in the picture Cathy Griffiths, one of the first to arrive, has started hopping already - or perhaps she's just jumping for joy at the thought of spending her fortnights holiday in the fresh country air - and getting paid for it. (Cathy lives in Hastings)
